March 31 Out EarlyMrs Frog is out early this morning to check on the progress of her little taddies...
Froggie joke...A frog goes into a bank and walks up to the window. He can see from the teller’s nameplate that the teller's name is Patricia Whack. So he says, "Ms. Whack, I'd like to get a loan to buy a yacht and go on a cruise." Ms. Whack asks how much money he wants to borrow. The frog says around $55,000. Ms. Whack asks the frog his name and he replies "Kermit Jagger, it shouldn’t be a problem, I know the branch manager." Ms. Whack explains that $55,000 is a large sum of money and that he will need to put up something as collateral against the loan. She asks "do you have anything as collateral?" Kermit says, "Sure, I have this," and produces a small pewter cricket, about an inch tall. Stunned, Ms. Whack explains that she'll have to speak with the branch manager and walks into an office at the front of the bank. She finds the branch manager and says: "There's a frog by the named of Kermit Jagger out there who says he knows you and wants to borrow $55,000. He wants to use this as collateral." She holds up the small pewter cricket. "Like, what is this thing suppose to be?" So the branch manager looks back at her and says:
ARE you READY?
You're warned!
"It's a knick knack, Patti Whack. Give the frog a loan. His old man's a Rolling Stone." March 30 Day 18 in the Big Brother PondMy first outdoor hatchlings!!
they're quite shy - still hiding under the jelly and eating it - they'll need all their strength to explore the big bad pond!
in a couple of days I shall release the indoor ones (just hoping they won't eat all the outdoor ones! - maybe I'll wait a bit longer!)
Day 16 in the Big Brother PondYou can see the outside ones are tadpole-shaped now...
and LOOK!!!
My Babies!! Now to think of 60 names beginning with "T"
Terry
Tony
Tonia
Thaddeus
Timothy
err.....
Day 15 in the Big Brother PondDefinite changes now! And notice the bubbling - it's getting very bubbly round there - that means something's going on!
Day 14 in the Big Brother PondI think a slight change can be detected - a very slight kidneyfying of the dots - if you look very close...
I have also included a wider shot to show the extent of the spawn.
Builders!Sliced through my broadband cable - so missed loads of days - also (despite appearances) I do have to work sometimes! Anyway - in the meantime - my oldest son made me this animated frog... with a lily pad and some frogspawn... ahh - isn't that nice!
March 19 Froggie Joke... (ish!)A frog, curious about his family tree, wanted to find out if any of his ancestors came from Poland. He hired a researcher to look into it, who discovered that he was only a tad Pole.
(arf!) Day seven in the Big Brother PondI've looked - and I thing Tracey's tail is a trick of ther light - but I'll keep looking!
(not Tracey's tail - you understand - but the tail that Tracey spotted )
anyway - today there was some new spawn which Carys very skillfully captured with the net and put in an old plastic fish-tank in the boys' bedroom - armchair frogspawn watch will happen upstairs - I will still go down the pond in the cold...
anyway - looks pretty much the same again to me ... Day six in the Big Brother Pondoops! missed a day - very busy! March 17 another terrible frog joke...Jim Finley, the noted biologist, was stumped. He'd spent months studying the little green frogs in the Keefo swamp. The population, despite all efforts at predator control, was declining at an alarming rate. Finally, Finley went to the chemistry department at his college to see if anyone there might be able to help. Tom Trump looked into the problem, and came up with a solution. The little frogs had succumbed to a chemical change in the swamp's water, and simply couldn't stay coupled long enough to reproduce. Tom brewed up a new adhesive, made from a dash of this, a dash of that, and most critically, one part sodium.
"You mean?.... " Jim said when told. "Yes," said Tom, "They needed mono-sodium glue to mate." Day five in the Big Brother PondWe went out frog-hunting last night - and we caught one of them soliciting near some pond-weed. I think we put her off her stride, though as there is no new spawn the morning.
as for our featured clump - it was snowing today - so it has squashed itself up wth all the others for warmth - but it still looks pretty much like it did yesterday.
I'm thinking of bringing some inside in a plastic tank so the kids can watch it at closer quarters...
(maybe tomorrow..)
anyway - here's what it looks like today: March 16 STOP PRESS!!! SCIENCE FACT..."A new study shows that licking the sweat off a frog can cure depression. The down side is, the minute you stop licking, the frog gets depressed again." Day four in the Big Brother PondExciting developments!!!
On day one, the spawn was little black dots in balls of jelly. Today - just 3 days later - it is (errr...) - small black dots in little balls of jelly..
coupled with that it is freezing cold today - if it stays like this there's a possibility the pond will freeze over... still - there's some new spawn today - at the bottom of the pond - that'll be safe from the freeze, at least.
maybe I should add some growth hormones?? :-)
anyway - here's today's pic (I went out in the cold to get it - I suffer for my science!) March 15 Day Three in the Big Brother PondThere's loads more spawn again - amorous froggie nights down the bottom of our garden - I hope they're practising safe-sex... I shall have to have a word...
anyway - our clump has been merged with three new clumps - so tried a more closeup photo - and (guess what!) it still loooks pretty much the same!
what do you think? can you see any little taddie bits developing?? March 14 Inspirational image for my little taddies...Here's something to aim at little guys...
One day - you will all be famous..
Phil (amphibian motivational guru) Day Two in the Big Brother pondI added some flamingo-guards that I made out of some spare plywood - they should keep off the predators! You can't be too careful...
There is more spawn there today - some more frogs have been "at it" overnight. The patch we are focussing on is still there - and looks pretty much the same!
More photos tomorrow!! (I bet you can't wait Day One Froggie JokeTo relieve the boredom in between waiting for the 5pm photos - there will be froggie jokes and fun froggie facts - I bet you can't wait!!
Anyway - here's the Froggie Joke for Day 1...
A drunk is sitting at a bar, and says, "Bartender! Another drink."
The bartender shakes his head and says, "No you've had enough." "Well," the drunk says. "How about if I show you something really cool? Then will you give me a drink?" "Sure," the bartender says. "But it's gotta be pretty cool." The drunk takes a tiny piano and a frog out of his pockets and sets them on the bar. The frog starts banging away, playing a beautiful song. "No way," the bartender says. "Now you've really had enough." "If you give me a drink, I'll show you something even cooler," says the drunk. A man who had been watching all this comes up to the drunk and says, "You've got a million dollar act there. I'll give you $500,000 for them right now." "Not for sale," the drunk croaks. "Ok, $500,000 just for the frog." "Not for sale." "Ok, $500,000 just for the rat." The drunk agrees, and the man pays him and leaves. The bartender says to the drunk, "What did you do that for? You broke up a million dollar act!" "Not really," the drunk says. "You see, the frog's a ventriloquist." Day One in the Big Brother PondI went down the garden yesterday to scoop some pond-weed out of the pond when I noticed that froggy-spring has arrived in Upminster - there's frogspawn in the pond!
We are very easily pleased - but we only dug out the pond (specifically to be a wildlife Pond - not a fish-pond) in the Autumn of last year - so we are still in the first-year lifecycle.
So - I'm keeping a Frog-Blog to chart the development of the taddies - taking me back to schooldays when we all used to scoop frogspawn out of local ponds and then keep it in jamjars and watch the taddies develop - ahhh, simple days!
So... day one was yesterday - Monday 13th March, 2005 (about 5pm)
here's the first photo of a "clump" of spawn...
